Small outline fish tattoo on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close black and white photograph of a bare ankle and foot. The small tattoo is a single-line outline of two curved, fish-like shapes meeting at a point, with no shading. The image is in greyscale and the background is a plain light surface, keeping the focus on the design.

Tom was sitting on an upturned creel, staring at the water as if it owed him money. Between his boots lay the thing he'd been carving for a week: two fish scratched into a flat piece of driftwood, their tails curving out until they met at a single point, like a pair of men who had agreed to share one hook. 'Dad made them like that,' he said. 'Said it meant you go where the other goes, or you don't go at all.'
Nell crouched beside him and picked up the board. The lines were thin and careful, almost too neat for a boy who swore at knots. She saw then that he'd scratched a small ring where the two bodies joined, a mark for the bait they had both been chasing since spring, the bait that had sunk their father's boat off Ravenscar.
'You're not going out in the Sally tomorrow,' she said.
'I'm not asking you to come.'
'I know you're not.' She turned the wood over in her hands and found nothing on the back but salt. 'That's why I'm coming.'
