Two small stars on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
Two small four-pointed star tattoos sit on the upper chest near the collarbone and shoulder, set diagonally from one another. Each star has fine, precise linework with a lighter centre and dark shading on the points. The image is in muted, warm-toned colour, with the ink appearing in black and grey and the skin filling most of the frame.

The frost had got into the cold frames again, so Edith spent the first hour of the dark wrapping leeks in old newspaper and grumbling at the sky. Walter had always said the two bright points above the water butt were a pair of compasses, one pointing home and the other pointing at whatever you were foolish enough to want. He had said it every October for forty years, usually while she was on her knees in the bed by the fence, and she had never once let him finish the joke.

She straightened up with a hand in the small of her back and looked for them. They were where they always were, set a little askew from each other, the lower one dimmer and tilted as though it had been caught mid-turn. Tobias, her grandson, had left a telescope on the patio table with the lens cap missing and a note that said Gran, don't touch the focus, it's fine. She had touched the focus. Through it the stars had looked less like compasses and more like the little iron stars that hold up a gate, points bent by the glass and a pale grey heart in each.
She went back to the bed with the trowel and the bag of tulip bulbs. Walter's way was to plant each bulb pointing the same direction the stars leaned, so that come spring the flowers would all face the same corner of the garden. Edith knelt, sighted along the diagonal from one star to the other, and pressed the last bulb into the cold earth. The soil was damp and smelt of iron. She patted it flat, then sat back on her heels and let the telescope stay where it was.
