Looped line symbol on an ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a single black line forming overlapping loops with a dot at the centre sits on the side of a bare foot. The linework is even and uniform with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The photograph is taken close up in soft black and white, with the foot filling most of the frame against a dark background.

Rain again on the Thursday market, the awnings sagging over Mrs Okafor's fabric stall and my trestle of brass. I meant to close early. Instead I sat under the canvas with the kettle going and the light gone the colour of pewter, turning over the orrery Dennis left on Monday.

Dennis is seventy-one and was a signalman on the Wirral line before his knees gave out. He brought the thing in a carrier bag, one arm bent, a little brass moon hanging by a thread. 'Can you get it going before the grandkids come?' he asked. I said I'd try. While the rain eased he drew me a picture on the back of a receipt: a dot for the sun, and one line that looped out and back on itself three times, never quite returning to the same place. 'That's the one that worries me,' he said. 'Comes back round wrong every time.'

I spent the evening with a jeweller's loupe, a tin of watch oil and the pivot that had worn an oval in its bearing. By the time my lamp was the only light left on the stall, the arm turned true and the moon swung round the dot without a wobble. Looking at the receipt again, I understood the drawing. It was a path that kept missing its own place by a hair, and that was what made it a path at all.

On Friday, dry and bright, Dennis came back with his grandson, who turned the crank and watched the little planet swing wide and come home. The boy said it looked like a bee going round a flower. Dennis folded the receipt into his coat without a word, but he tapped the outside of the pocket twice, the way you might tap a letter you meant to answer.
