Fine line heartbeat on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line forms a jagged heartbeat or ECG-style trace with two peaks and a dip, sitting on the inner wrist. The linework is crisp and even, with no shading, and the image is greyscale so colour is not a factor. The hand is angled across the frame with a soft, plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, son, and keep your hands off the key until I've finished. Forty days out of Liverpool on the Clementine, with the wireless set spitting like a frying pan, and the only steady thing aboard was the swell recorder bolted to the chart room bulkhead. Old Mr Pardoe had rigged it himself, a stylus on a brass arm scratching ink onto paper that wound off a roll at the pace of a slow clock. You could read the sea off it the way a doctor reads a chest.

Then the weather came down off Newfoundland like a shut door. Three nights the stylus jumped and dropped, jumped and dropped, and the men stopped singing in the fo'c'sle. On the fourth morning the trace went flat for the length of a held breath, and Pardoe went white and swore the thing was broken. It wasn't. The screw had come clear of the water and the hull had gone slack, so he had the engineers ease the boilers down and we all waited.

When the sea settled, the stylus drew a small peak, then a dip, then a second peak, and it kept drawing that same shape as if the ship had found her own pulse again. Pardoe tore the strip off and pinned it above the wireless table, and nobody in that cabin would touch the roll without asking first. Years later I asked him why he'd kept it. He said a ship is only iron and rivets until something aboard starts counting.
