Cross and heart tattoos on wrist and finger
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black cross with a heart-shaped gap in its centre sits on the inner wrist, and a small black outline heart sits on the side of a finger. Both tattoos are in black ink only, with the cross in bold solid fill and the heart in thin linework. The hand rests on a red fabric background, with red nail polish and a filigree silver ring visible on the same hand.

Sit down, the pair of you. The 4.10 is late as always, and a late train gives a story room to breathe. You want to hear about the lamp hung on the post at Halse Cross? Old Dorrie Pike kept it. Every night she climbed the ladder with the paraffin and the cutting shears, and every night she cut a heart out of the tin shade so the light came through in the shape she'd promised her husband she'd keep.

He'd gone out on the goods line in the winter of the big frost and never come back up the embankment. Dorrie didn't weep on the platform, she said, weeping was for the ticket hall where people could see it. She polished the brass, lit the lamp and listened for boots on the cinders.
The station master wanted the thing replaced with a plain electric bulb. Dorrie told him a plain light showed a train where to go, but a heart-shaped one told it where it had been. He laughed, then he stopped laughing, because the following spring a driver nearly ran through the crossing in fog, and it was that small thin heart he swore he'd seen, steady in the murk, and he braked just in time.
They still hang the lamp there. Nobody's sure whose hand cut the heart now, or whether it was ever Dorrie's idea at all. Mind your step on the way out. The platform's wet, and the 4.10 is coming round the bend.
