Small outline heart on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart outline sits on the back of a shoulder, drawn in a single thin black line. The linework is even and clean, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The warm skin tones and soft grey wall behind the shoulder keep the focus on the small tattoo, with a black bra strap running diagonally across the frame.

You will think I have finally gone soft in the head, but hear me out before you laugh. Yesterday Brother Edric caught me at the lectern with the vellum half-ruled for the Lenten psalter, and I had my pen dipped and was drawing, in the lower margin of folio forty, a little heart. Not a flourish. Not a saint's initial. A plain heart, one thin line of iron-gall ink, no shading, no fill, the kind of mark a child makes on a steamed window.

Edric wanted it scraped. Father Ambrose wanted to know who had given me leave. I said nobody had, and that was the truth, which seemed to annoy them more. We have spent thirty years learning that a book is a thing made without a single stray breath showing, and here was I putting my name, or something like it, in the one place no one reads.

Then Ambrose came to the desk himself and bent close, his cowl almost brushing the page, and he looked at it for a long while. He did not say anything. He turned the leaf back to the start and went out without a word, and I heard him in the cloister, humming the sequence for the Virgin, which he has not done since the winter his brother died.

So the heart stays. I have ruled the rest of the book straight as a rail, but I left that margin alone. When you come at Easter, look for it. Folio forty, bottom edge, nearly under the gutter. It is not much to show for six years of copying, but it is the only line in the whole psalter that I meant.

Your loving brother, Anselm
