Sit down before the lift starts again, love, it likes an audience. You're new, so you'll not know about Nell Brackley in the pathology store on the third floor. Thirty-one years she sorted tubes in that basement, and every Friday night, when the department went quiet, she'd take a fine nib pen from her cardigan pocket and draw a small heart in the corner of one label. Nobody saw her do it. Nobody was meant to.

The porters had a theory that she only drew them on the samples that came back clean. Others said she drew them on the ones that did not, so the hearts would be the last kind thing a family saw before the paperwork. I never asked which. You don't ask Nell things. You wait for her to put the kettle on and tell you what she wants you to know.

Then one winter the lab moved floors, and the new printer produced every label perfectly, straight and grey, and Nell sat with her pen over a blank sticker for a whole shift without using it. In the morning she sent a note to the ward manager asking for a single rubber stamp of a heart. The manager said no, of course, and Nell said that was fine, she'd keep to the margins.

So when you see a heart in the corner of a form on this floor, don't tidy it up. Hand the form on. That's all the lift wants from us tonight, and it's nearly ready to move.
