Small outline triangle on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph taken from behind shows a person with bare shoulders and back and blonde hair falling forward over the neck. A small, simple triangle is drawn in thin black outline just below the hairline. The background is a plain pale wall, and the soft lighting leaves the skin tones warm and natural.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pencil dots on the chart had been there since March, three of them making a small hard triangle off Gannet Point, and Ruth Pellow had never asked her father what they meant. He was at the wheel of the Constance Hale, bringing her round past the breakwater with the swell lifting the stern, and he did not look at the chart either. He knew the water the way other men knew hymns.

The fleet had gone out thin that season. Four boats were left of the nine that worked the bay, and the crews talked in the Ship about who would sell first. Ruth sat on a fish box in the wheelhouse doorway, mending a split in the cod-end with a netting needle and counting knots under her breath. Three marks, three points, her father had told her once, and you did not fish inside them. He had never said which way the danger ran.

Past the point the water turned from grey to the colour of strong tea. He throttled back. A buoy lay ahead, its cage bent over like a hand, and beyond it a string of bright orange floats bobbed inside the line everyone agreed to keep clear of. Someone had set pots where they should not. Her father swore quietly and reached for the radio.

Ruth left the needle in the net and went to stand beside him. "We keep to the outside," he said, and they turned the long way round, the triangle closing behind them on the chart like a door pulled to. Ruth tied off the mend and found she had made it perfectly, every mesh square, the way he had taught her to do the things that mattered.
