Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A small flower with eight outlined petals and a open centre circle sits on the side of the torso. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The flower is set against bare skin, with a grey top lifted at the edge and a pink garment band visible beside it.

Right, sit closer, and mind the draught from that door, it's been coming through since the Coronation. You want the one about the Palais at Morecambe-by-the-Sea, the one with the sprung floor? Well. Eight boards in the middle of that floor were laid in a flower, a ring of petals cut from pale maple, and the carpenter, Albert Hesketh, did it with a pencil and no rule at all, because he said a rule would only lie to him.

Every Saturday the band played Ta-Ra-Ra and the young ones went round the petals in twos. Nobody noticed the flower except Violet Mabry, who swept the floor at closing and kept the dust in a biscuit tin. She said that on nights when the moon sat over the sea window, the open centre of the flower looked like an eye that had decided to wink back.

One October a girl came in from the rain with a locket a sailor had given her, and she dropped it between the petals. The band kept playing. Violet found it at two in the morning, under the centre board, and she sat on the boards with it in her lap until the lamps went out.

She never told anyone what she did with the locket. But the following spring the flower had a new petal, pale and clean, and Albert's grandson swore it was not there when he sanded the floor the year before. Dance on it, love, and mind your heels. It knows the way home.
