Sunflower tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Colour · Photo
A large sunflower is tattooed on the upper back, with its dark brown seed head at the centre and layered yellow and orange petals spreading outwards. Green leaves and sepals appear at the left edge of the bloom. The shading gives the petals and centre a three-dimensional look, and the photo is taken from behind and above the shoulder.

Come closer, the lot of you, and mind the tent pole. The year the Halloran Brothers' Travelling Marvels pitched on the flats below Harrowgate, there was a girl called Nell Ashby who could throw a hoop over any bottle on the midway without looking. Her father sold roasted chestnuts from a tin barrow and swore the sun followed her about. Nobody believed him, but the farmers' wives who came to watch her swore it too, because every afternoon at four the sun would slant gold across the field and every flower in the lane would turn its great round face toward her.

Then the Brothers went broke over a camel that would not stop eating the canvas, and the show packed up in a single wet night. Nell stayed behind in a cart with one carpet bag and a packet of seed her father had bought off a Dutch sailor for a shilling. She planted them along a ditch by the toll road, and the seed-heads came up the height of a man, and they nodded at every passing carter as if they were expecting him.
You want to know what became of her. Well, the sun still comes round to that ditch at four, and the hoop-girl is still out there, turning her face to the light, which is more than the Brothers ever managed. Mind the tent pole on your way out.
