Small owl tattoo on the hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small owl is drawn in a simple outline, facing forward with a few interior marks suggesting feathers. The thin, even linework is in a single dark blue-grey ink, and the design sits on the back of the hand near the wrist. A hand with an orange painted nail rests on a wooden table, with a knitted sleeve at the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The owl came to the back step of our cottage the week my father stopped speaking to the chapel. It was a small grey thing, no bigger than a teacup, and it sat on the boot scraper as though it had been posted there. Nobody in Hollin Edge kept owls. We kept hens and grudges and one goat called Mrs Ashby, and the wood beyond the last field was left to the badgers and the men who came to cut hazel.

I fed it bacon rind the first evening, and it regarded me with the flat, offended patience owls have. The second evening it brought me a button, blue glass, the kind that came off a waistcoat. I knew where it had come from. Tom Greaves had gone into the wood after the hazel cutters went home and had not come out. My father said he had gone to Leeds. The owl had plainly been to the wood and back, and it wanted me to know.

I followed it on the third night with a lantern and a bad pair of boots. It flew from stump to stump, always waiting for me at the next one, until we reached a hollow where the ground had sunk and the roots stood up like the ribs of a boat. Tom was there under a drift of leaves, his coat still buttoned to the throat. I laid the button in his open palm. The owl settled on the rim of my lantern, turned its head all the way round, and flew back to the village ahead of me, unhurried, as if it had only been showing me the road.
