Small palm tree on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman with long wavy brown hair is photographed from behind, sitting on a white bed in a white top and black bra strap. A small palm tree is tattooed on her upper arm, drawn in thin black linework with a slim trunk and a simple cluster of fronds at the top. The soft, bright background and neutral tones keep the focus on the small tattoo.

At the Hendaye crossing, Tomas Aldana had been waiting since dawn with a cardboard tube under his arm, and the customs man had already asked him twice what was inside it. "Seedlings," he said the second time. The officer, a thin man with a grey moustache and a tin of boiled sweets on his desk, held out his hand.

Inside the tube was a palm frond, not a seedling at all, cut from the tree in the courtyard of his late sister's house in Alicante. He had wrapped it in damp muslin and then in newspaper so the leaves would not crack. The officer unrolled it on the counter slowly, the way he might open a letter from someone he did not trust. The fronds had dried to the colour of weak tea, but the trunk still held a little green near the base.
"Plant matter is forbidden," the officer said. Tomas nodded. He had known this. He had also known, since the funeral, that Inés had wanted one of the trees planted in the garden at Bayonne, where her daughter now lived with a husband who sold insurance and a dog that did not like the wind. Tomas had promised. A promise weighed more than a frond, and he had carried it all the way from the coast.
The officer studied the dry leaves for a long time. Then he took his rubber stamp, pressed it onto the paper stapled to the tube, and slid it back across the counter. "Plant it where it can see the sea," he said, already turning to the next car in the queue. Tomas walked out into the grey light with the tube tucked under his arm, and he did not look back at the barrier.
