Green moth tattoo on the back of the neck
Traditional · Neck · Colour · Photo
A woman with blonde hair tied in a bun lies on a pillow, seen from behind, with a moth tattoo on the back of her neck. The moth has teal-green wings with red eyes, yellow and red detailing and bold black outlines, and its body runs down the centre of the neck. Another coloured tattoo is partly visible on her upper arm, and she wears a grey sleeveless top.

The snow came over the Kessel saddle two nights before the mail, so you will have to forgive the state of this paper. I have kept it folded inside my coat with the stove ash, which is why it smells of the hut and not of ink.
Something came in through the broken shutter on Tuesday, when the wind was loudest. A moth, the size of my palm, the green of the lake below the Kessel in June, with wings edged in red and yellow like the stitching on Mother's good apron. It had two eyes on its wings, red as the lamp glass, and it would not leave the lantern. I tried the broom. It simply sat on the brass rim and looked at me, which I did not care for.
On Wednesday the cloud lifted for an hour and I saw Pieter's dog coming up the scree alone, with a strip of his red scarf in its mouth. I followed it down with the sledge. Pieter was in the gully below the cairn with his leg folded wrong, but alive, and he said the moth had been circling the dog's collar since morning.
I do not believe in such things. But the moth is still on the lamp, and I have not had the heart to put it out. Come up when the pass opens, bring the good lantern oil, and we will see whether it has gone or only grown quieter.
Your loving sister, Anka
