Yin yang flower tattoos on two thighs
Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
Two legs rest on bedding, each with a black and grey flower tattoo on the upper thigh. The flowers have layered, outlined petals with a yin yang symbol at the centre, shaded in grey to give depth. The photograph is taken from a close angle with soft, warm lighting, and the tattoos are the clear focus of the frame.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the 7:14 is late again and the stove in the parcels room is still warm. I'll tell you about Ada Pryce and the chrysanthemum man, though my own grandmother swore it happened at Hexham and not here.

Ada kept the flower stall under the clock at Market Ferry, where the trains ran north to the mills and south to the sea. Every morning a grey-coated man came down the platform with a crate of bronze and white blooms cut from the gardens past the cutting. He never gave his name. He only ever said, 'One for the day you're leaving, one for the day you come home,' and he laid two heads on her counter, each as round as a clock face, petals layered like shingles on a roof.
Ada would pin the flowers to her coat and say nothing. Years went past in that way. Then one wet March the flower man did not come, and in his place a boy from the goods yard brought a note. The hand that wrote it had gone shaky, and it said only: the middle is the part you keep, the edges are for weather.
Ada took the train south that evening with both flowers wrapped in newspaper in her case, and the next morning, at the coast, she found a stall of her own. Mind you, I never saw her go, and I never saw the flower man again, but on the first warm day each year there's a bloom left on the platform bench, and nobody here has ever planted one.
