Small pink rose on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A small pink rose in bloom sits at the top of a thin stem with two green leaves, all drawn in fine line work with soft pink and green shading. The tattoo is set on pale skin against a blurred background, with the subject turned away from the camera. The palette is restrained, with the pink flower as the main point of colour.

She had carried the cutting three miles from the old vicarage garden, where her grandmother had kept a red rose against the south wall. It had one bloom on it, pale pink, and two leaves the colour of pond weed. Hannah walked the grey slope every evening after the whistle, scraping a hole with a tin spoon and pouring in water from the beck, until the men coming off shift stopped to watch her.

Old Tom Garrity, who had worked the face for forty years and never once looked up at the sky, climbed the tip with his lamp and said the bloom was a poor thing, too small to be worth the trouble. Hannah said her grandmother always claimed the small ones lasted longest. Tom went home and said nothing more about it.
In June the rose opened, no bigger than a thumbnail, and the deputies began hanging their brass check tokens on the stalk so they could find their way back in the dark. Nobody remembered deciding that. It just happened, the way the coal did, from one shift to the next.
