Dilys Penrose had been feeding the pup for a week before she admitted it belonged to nobody. It came up from the slipway each morning at half six, sat on the third step of the chapel and waited, its tail curled round its back legs like a question mark someone had tucked away. She called it Tuesday, because that was the day it first appeared, and because she refused to name anything that might leave.

The last ferry to Inishgarra went out in October. Dilys kept the bakery open anyway, and the pup kept coming. On the first hard frost she found it asleep among the flour sacks with a thin bar of low sun across its ears, the light making a bright arc just above its head, as though someone had lent it a halo for the morning and forgotten to ask for it back.

Her nephew drove over from Bristol that winter to sort out the lease. He said the shelter in Penzance had a warm kennel and a vet who came on Thursdays. Dilys packed a sack of day-old loaves, knelt on the cold cobbles, and told Tuesday to be good. It sat, tail wrapped tight, and watched her with its head on one side as the van doors closed.

By the time they reached the top of the hill, the fog had come in off the water and the ferry horn was sounding somewhere below. Her nephew glanced in the mirror and went quiet. On the slipway, in the thin grey light, a small dark shape sat on the bottom step, tail curled, waiting for a boat that would not come.
