Black line creature with curled tail

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bold black outline of a rounded creature with a small head, curled tail and a spiral detail, with a few short lines and a looping stylised mark beside it. The lines are solid and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on smooth skin under a glossy light. The composition is close and centred on the tattoo against a dark background.

You have the lantern in one hand and your mother's bread in the other, and the stile is already slick with the first frost, so you tell yourself the dormouse can wait until morning. It cannot. Mrs Hadley's boy swore he saw it curled in the hazel at the wood's edge, tail wrapped round itself like a spring someone had pressed shut, and nobody in Thorne Lane believes a dormouse can survive a winter in a hedge.

The path bends where the blackthorn leans over the ditch. Three short gusts run across the lantern glass, and you hear something tick against the bark, then stop. You kneel. The creature is there, round as a fist, its small head tucked under the curve of its tail, and it does not run. It only opens one eye, black as a drop of ink, and seems to ask what took you so long.

You unwrap the bread and set it down, then sit back on your heels and wait. Your breath goes up in clouds. The spiral of its tail tightens and loosens with each breath, and you notice the mark on the bank beside it is not a root at all but the same looping curl your grandfather drew at the bottom of every letter he sent, the sign that meant come home.

When you stand, your knees ache and the lantern has burned low. You leave the bread and walk back along the ditch, and at the stile you look round once. The hazel is still, the bread is gone, and the frost on the path is pressed with small, neat prints leading the other way, towards the village, towards your back door.
