Cat outline with red flower on lower back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A small black outline of a cat sits in profile, with its tail curling along the left edge, next to a cluster of red flower or berry shapes. The linework is thin and even, and the red is the only colour used, so the piece reads as mostly black with small red accents. The tattoo sits centrally on the lower back above the waistband of blue jeans, with plain skin around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cat arrives at the Corrin Bridge checkpoint the same minute the night bus does, which tells you it has been doing this for years. It slips under the barrier, pale grey and unhurried, and settles on the painted white line as though it holds the lease. Nobody else in the booth looks up. You keep a tin of sardines in the bottom drawer for emergencies, and the cat has decided that makes you a colleague.

On nights when the river runs high it carries something in its mouth: a sprig of red berries, bright as sealing wax against the wet tarmac. You have never seen where it finds them. The cat walks the fence line with its tail curled high, stops at the lamp post where the scrap yard begins, and sets the sprig down with great care. Then it looks back at you through the glass, as if to say the paperwork is in order and you may now stamp whatever you like.

Last Tuesday a van came through with a driver who could not stop turning his wedding ring. Your questions were routine, his answers were routine, and you were reaching for the stamp when the cat appeared on the roof of the van, serene as a figurehead, and dropped a single red berry onto the dashboard. The driver laughed too loudly. You waved him on, because some borders are only lines painted on a road, and some are kept by a cat's opinion.

In the morning the sprig lay at the lamp post, its berries shrivelled, and the cat had gone back to whichever side it came from. You picked the sprig up and laid it in the drawer beside the sardines. By Friday you had stopped pretending you did not know which side of the river it belonged to.
