Black outline tattoo of two hands reaching towards each other on the inner upper arm.

Two reaching hands on the inner upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows two open hands with fingers extended, one approaching from the right and one from the left, leaving a small gap between their fingertips. The design is drawn in a single black outline with no shading or fill, and the skin shows no added colour. The tattoo sits centrally on the inner upper arm, shot at a slight angle against a plain wall and dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ewe had gone down in the lower field, where the ditch runs under the ice, and by the time I reached her she had stopped straining. Dad was already on his knees in the slush with his sleeve pushed past the elbow. He didn't look up. 'Lamb's turned, and I can't get a grip on the head. Get your hand in beside mine, slow as you like.'

I knelt and slid my arm in alongside his. The warmth inside was almost shocking after the frost on my fingers. We worked by feel, not sight, two hands reaching through the same narrow gap, our fingertips meeting and parting as the lamb shifted. Whenever his hand went still, mine did too, as if we had agreed on it without speaking. The ewe groaned. The sky above the hedge turned the colour of pewter, then of nothing at all.

The lamb came with a rush of water and a silence that made my stomach drop. Dad had it across his knees before I'd sat back on my heels, rubbing its ribs with a handful of straw, harder than seemed kind. Then a cough, a tiny shake of the ears, and a bleat thin as bell wire. He laughed, a sound I hadn't heard from him since the funeral, and handed me the bundle while he wiped his hands on his coat.

We stayed there until the torch batteries gave out, two pairs of hands cupped over a wet creature that didn't yet know how close it had come. Neither of us reached for the other. We never did. But in the dark I could still feel the place where his fingers had been, exactly one finger's width away, and that was enough to walk back up the hill by.
