Small rose tattoo on the back of a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests on the rim of a cream steering wheel in a vintage car, with the dashboard gauges behind it and bare legs visible below. A small rose is tattooed on the back of the hand, drawn with fine black outlines and light shading. The image is warm and sunlit, with the tattoo sitting near the centre of the frame beside gold rings and a gold chain bracelet.

The car came into the yard on a flatbed in March, its battery dead, one wing crumpled and wasps living in the heater vent. Harold said it was a cream motor from before anyone in our office was born, and the ticket we wrote said only "cream, sound body, rust under the sills, do not sell for parts." The fuel needle had sat on empty so long it looked like it had given up.

Harold spent a week on the steering wheel alone. He stripped the paint back to grey metal and found, pressed into the boss beneath the horn ring, a rose no wider than a shirt button. Somebody had made it with a nail or a bradawl, patiently, one ring of petals after another. "Whoever did that wasn't bored," he said, and he would not let me sand it smooth.
In August a woman in a yellow raincoat came in asking whether we still had the car. She didn't ask the price. She asked whether the rose was still there, and when Harold showed her she laughed, then went quiet. Her father had let her do it the summer she was nine, parked on a verge outside Lincoln while he fixed a puncture and told her to keep her hands busy.
We fitted a new battery, and she sat behind the wheel with her hand resting on the rim while Harold turned the key. The engine caught on the second try. The needle climbed off the empty mark, slow as a clock, and the afternoon sun came through the windscreen and lit the rose so it looked freshly cut. She didn't take the car that day. She only wanted to hear it run.
