Flower and blade tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A person rests one hand on a wooden steering wheel, showing a forearm tattoo with a large dark flower and a blade or arrow-like shape beside it. The linework is bold, with black and grey shading and some red tones in the design. The forearm sits across the upper half of the frame, with the wheel and car interior filling the rest.

Every night after the last tram, the woman with the black dahlia stood under the broken clock at Vine Street and waited for a driver who had nothing left to lose. Dennis Pell had nothing left but an old cream saloon with a split wheel rim and a debt to the garage on Tanner Street. When he pulled up, she slid into the passenger seat without asking and laid a short knife on the dashboard, its blade bright with the orange light of the city.

"Drive me to the river," she said. "Mind the wheel. It wants holding like a promise." He drove. She told him the blade was for cutting rope, not men, and the flower was for whatever grew back after. The lamps slid past like a row of counted coins. At Hallow Bridge she asked him what he would sell the cab for. He said nothing. She said that was the wrong answer, and also the right one, and pointed at the water.
He stopped the car. She stepped out, left the knife where it lay, and walked onto the bridge where the fog hung thick as wool. When Dennis went looking for her he found only the dahlia, dark red at its heart, pinned to the steering boss beneath his palm.
The next morning the garage man on Tanner Street was paid in full, and nobody could say where the money had come from. Dennis kept the flower in the glovebox and drove the long way round by the river every night after that. He never once took a fare who asked to be taken home.
