Small zodiac symbol on the inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is raised in front of a car steering wheel, showing a small black tattoo on the inner wrist that resembles the Leo zodiac symbol. The linework is thin and solid black with no visible shading, and the tattoo is a small, simple outline. The image is mostly neutral tones, with pale pink nails, a gold bracelet and a black steering wheel providing the main colour contrast.

Nell had the ovens to herself at ten to four, which was the first thing Mr Vance had told her he would never allow. The flour sat in its sacks like sleepers. She scored the sourdough batch and the blades slid cleanly, and she thought about the note he'd pinned to the proving rack: Shape the Sunday cob. Do not let it sulk.

The cob was a round loaf that Vance called the lion. When he tore a strip of dough and rolled it into a tail, then folded the head over it, the shape curled back on itself like a question mark with a mane. He had taught her the fold in March, his hands over hers, his knuckles swollen with cold. Now she pressed the seam shut with her thumb, slowly, the way he did, and the curl held.
By five the street outside had its first van, and the shop window had gone from black to a bruised blue. She slid the tray into the deck oven and watched through the little glass as the loaves began to lift. The tail split along its length in a neat line, the way a seam opens when the bread is ready to breathe.
When Vance came in at quarter past, coat still buttoned, he said nothing. He crouched by the oven, peered in, and tapped the glass twice with one finger. Nell understood it was praise, the most he ever gave, and she took the tray out herself before the crust could darken.
