Lotus tattoo on the back of a hand
Botanical · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand holding a plastic cup of iced coffee with a straw, photographed in front of a car steering wheel and dashboard. A shaded lotus flower with soft grey gradients and dark outlines covers the back of the hand and wrist, and a small partial tattoo is visible on a finger. The palette is entirely black and grey apart from the painted red nails and the pale drink.

The dashboard clock said 09:04 when I finally pulled into the layby off Chorlton Street, though it had been wrong since the spring and nobody at the depot had bothered to fix it. I left the engine running for the heater and wedged my iced coffee between my knees. The ice had gone to glass, and the straw was chewed flat from an hour of waiting.

The job was a single flower in a brown card envelope, to be delivered to a flat above the launderette before the bells at midnight. Mrs Okafor had been particular on the phone. "Not a rose," she'd said. "Roses are for people who want to be looked at. A lotus is for people growing up through mud." I had written it on the docket because it made me smile, and I'd half forgotten it by the time the envelope sat on the passenger seat.
The door at the top of the stairs was open a crack. A man in mismatched socks took the envelope and slid out a drawing done in biro on cartridge paper, shaded with pencil until the petals looked lit from underneath. "My mum's," he said. "She did it the year she moved here, when the city was all grey to her." He held it up to the window, where the canal caught the streetlamps in long pale strips.
I drove back with the windows down. At the next red light I lifted the lid off the coffee and looked at the melt, a cloudy brown bloom rising slowly through the ice, and thought about how a thing can open in water and nobody ever sees the exact moment it happens.
