Small sailboat tattoo on the wrist

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small sailboat with a single triangular sail and a hull is tattooed on the inner wrist. The linework is simple and dark grey, with light shading inside the sail and hull. The hand is raised against a plain, pale background, which keeps the tattoo as the focal point at the bottom left of the frame.

We ran down the dyke with the single brown sail drawn tight and the reed beds hissing either side. Ada did not speak. She had a tin of Golden Syrup, a bent spoon, and a habit of licking the spoon and then tapping the tiller twice with it when she was thinking. The tapping went on for a mile. Then she said her father had sold the boatyard the winter the ice came, and the new owners had painted the hulls white and called them yachts.

Where the broad opened up, the wind came round hard off the water and the boom swung over with a crack that made the gulls lift. Ada let the sheet run, laughed once, and put the tiller hard over. We heeled until the lee rail kissed the water and I could see the bottom, brown and clear as tea. She held us there, grinning, while the old shape of the yard came back into view on the far bank.

We beached her at dusk on the same mud. Ada folded the sail the way she'd been taught, corner to corner, and left the spoon on the thwart for whoever needed something sweet next.
