Fine line finger tattoos of a pentagram and blades

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with extended fingers shows three small tattoos: a pentagram inside a circle on the lowest finger, a sword pointing upwards on the middle finger and a small mallet-like object on the top finger. The linework is thin and uniform in dark ink, with no shading or fill. The hand is set against dark green grass scattered with yellow and orange autumn leaves.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

At the autumn fair in Ludlow the rain came sideways off the river and the stallholders hauled their tarpaulins tight. Old Ina Pardoe had a trestle at the far end, under the chestnut trees where the leaves lay in wet heaps. She sold only three small things: a circle with a star scratched inside it, a blade no longer than a finger, and a mallet the size of a clothes peg. People laughed at her prices. They never laughed twice.

A carter named Tobias Wren came through on the third day, soaked to the skin, his horse lame in the traces. He had lost a wager to a travelling man who had taken his silver and his good boots. He asked Ina what the charms were for. She said the circle keeps a promise made out of doors, the blade cuts a debt clean, and the mallet knocks a door shut behind you. Tobias said he owed nobody anything, but was owed plenty. Ina wrapped the three in brown paper and said that was the right answer, and she would take a penny for the lot.

He carried them back to the bridge, where the travelling man sat on a flat stone counting coins with his thumb. Tobias did not shout. He unwrapped the paper and set the charms in a row on the wet stone, the circle first, the blade standing upright, the mallet last. The man's thumb stopped. Rain ran off the arch in threads. Without a word the man gathered his coins, then his boots, and walked off into the dripping trees, and nobody in Ludlow saw him again.

Tobias came back the next market day with a sound horse and a full purse. Ina had already packed her trestle away. Only one yellow leaf lay where her three charms had been, pressed flat on the wood by the rain, and he left a penny beside it anyway.
