Matching galaxy triangle tattoos on wrists
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, showing a large black outlined triangle with a purple and pink galaxy-style starfield inside it on the inner forearm. A smaller pair of nested black outlined triangles sits on the back of the other hand near the thumb. The linework is clean and thin, and the photograph is taken from above against a grey pavement with dark fabric at the top left.

Brother Anselm has taken to calling the triangle the only honest shape, since three lines cannot pretend to be anything else. I write to you from the scriptorium at Holm Abbey, where the cold comes up through the flagstones and the ink thickens in the well if we leave the shutter open. Sister Winifred has finally let me copy the star tables from the old Persian astrolabe, and I have spent three weeks drawing them in brown iron gall, one careful line at a time.

The trouble is that the sky will not sit still on a page. When I came to the Pleiades, the ink bled into the vellum and turned the dots to smudges like spilled wine. Brother Anselm laughed and said the stars were only doing what stars do, which is wander. He showed me a trick he learned from a draughtsman in Lincoln: draw the outer triangle first, then a smaller one nested inside it, and fill the gap with the deep blue wash the illuminators keep in the cellar. Dot the gold in last, one speck at a time, and the whole thing holds still.
I have made a pair for the new novices' cloaks, so the two of them can keep time when they walk the cloister together. Yours, when we meet at Lady Day, I will draw on the back of your hand with a finer nib, the triangle nested inside its own echo, so that you can read the hour by it. Do not let the laundress scrub it off.
