Script tattoo on a forearm beside a diamond ring
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together against a dark background, with a black script tattoo on the upper forearm, partly cut off by the frame. The tattoo is in fine black ink with smooth, even strokes, and the visible letters read as the start of I love. The image is in full colour overall, with red nail polish and a large clear stone ring with a pavé band providing the main colour contrast.

Dear Nell, the boiler on the Mary Ellen cracked on Tuesday somewhere off the Pentland Firth, and we have been tied up at Stromness for nine days while the engineers argue over a single bolt. I am writing this at the back of the Ship Inn with a pint going flat beside me and the wind trying the shutters. I bought the ring in Glasgow the week before we sailed, from a man on Argyle Street who swore the stone came out of Amsterdam and wanted his money in coins only. You will say I was daft to spend my first wage on it. You will be right.

I meant to put the rest of the sentence on this page, the bit you used to tease me about, the bit I always swallowed in your mother's kitchen when she was listening. I have tried four times and each attempt looks like a man drowning in ink. So I have settled for the first half, which I wrote so carefully the nib nearly tore the paper. The rest is folded small in the envelope, tucked under the ring box. Hold the page up to the lamp if the words won't come clear.
The Mary Ellen sails again on Monday. If the bolt holds I will be home for the herring run, and you can read the end of it yourself, in person, with the kettle on and your feet on the fender. Tell your father the boiler is his fault for never having painted the thing. Tell the gulls on the harbour wall I said hello. And if the post is slow, keep the ring on the window ledge where the light hits it in the mornings, so I can see it from the deck when we round the point.
Yours until the sea gives me back, Tom.
