Fine line chevron on the wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single thin black line forms a chevron that wraps across the inner wrist, with the point facing towards the hand. The line work is even and delicate, with no shading or fill. The black and white photograph shows the arm and hand against a white wall, with a striped sleeve at the top of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wardens of Tallow Cross had run out of ink by the time the last of the trucks came over the dunes, so they used a thin needle from the seed bank and a drop of soot. Each carrier got one line, bent into a point, drawn across the inner wrist so the point faced the fingers. Nobody asked why. You learned to read a mark the way you learned to read water.

Ines carried brine-jars from the east pumps to the salt houses for eleven summers. The line was a guide, the old woman at the cross told her, a finger's worth of direction. Point the hand where the jar must go and the jar would follow. Ines did not believe this. She believed in weight and in the long walk, and she kept the jars level by counting the pale stones along the causeway.

In the twelfth summer a jar slipped on the causeway and split. Ines knelt in the spill, tipped her hand to catch what she could, and saw the point of the line aim straight down at a cracked tile between her knees. Under the tile ran a channel no warden had mapped, and the water in it was sweet. She dug with her fingers until the nails broke.

They named the channel Ines's Point, and the salt houses were moved a mile west to meet it. When children ask now why every carrier wears the mark, the old women tell them it was never about the road. A line only shows you where your hand is already reaching.
