Small script tattoo on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long platinum blonde wavy hair is photographed from behind, wearing a lace-up back dress in a dusty mauve tone. A small black script tattoo runs vertically down the outer upper arm, and the lettering is too small to read clearly at this resolution. The linework is thin and the ink is solid black, set against a bright, softly lit window in the background.

The post van leaves Corrow at six, so you have until then to finish the letter, and the pass is still under snow when you start it. You write at the kitchen table with your coat on because the stove went out before the kettle boiled. Outside, the ridge above Bealach Dubh stands white against a sky the colour of pewter, and the only road over it stays closed until Thursday.

You have written three versions already. The first mentioned the ewes and the bridge washed out in March. The second was all weather. The third only said you were sorry, which is not the same as saying you were wrong. Mairead at the shop says a letter should carry one true thing and leave the rest to the reader, so you set the pen down, pick it up again, and write that the lamp in the upper window was lit every night you were gone. You counted it from the far side of the pass as proof that someone was still awake.

The turn comes when you realise you never asked whether the lamp was for you or for the collie that slept beneath it. You laugh alone in the cold room, and the laugh sounds like someone else's.

Before the light goes, you fold the page, cross out the ewes, and climb the lane with the letter in one pocket and a tin of matches in the other. At the cairn you light the candle, set the paper beneath a flat stone, and start back down before the snow decides for you.
