Small fine line tattoos on an arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a woman in a black lace and mesh bra with her arm raised against a blue wall. Several small black tattoos sit on her upper arm and forearm, including a heart-shaped outline and a tiny circular motif near the wrist, drawn with thin, unshaded linework. The palette is entirely black ink on natural skin, and the framing is tight, cropping the face out of view.

Dear Nan, the boats came in late again on Tuesday and the Mary Ellen lost her second dan buoy off the Runnel Stone, so Dad has been sulking like a wet gull. I am writing this at the kitchen table with the lamp turned low because the gas is dear and the tea has gone cold beside me.

You asked whether I still keep the brass compass you gave me. I do. It sits in the biscuit tin with Mam's wedding ring and the little silver heart I bought off the stall at Penzance market, the one that came unsoldered the first week. Ned says he will mend it properly when the weather lets him up the mast, but I have stopped expecting things from Ned that the weather does not allow.
The fleet went out again at four this morning and I walked down to the quay to watch them round the head. Eleven boats, their lights going out one by one like candles pinched between finger and thumb. Ned was in the last one. I stood by the net loft with my hands in my coat pockets and drew a small ring in the damp on the wall with my thumbnail, the way you taught me, so the boats would come home inside it. The gulls were going mad over the fish heads on the slip and the sky was the colour of a pewter spoon.
They all came back by noon, every one of them. Ned walked up the hill with his cap in his hand and salt crusted in his eyebrows, and he looked at the wall before he looked at me. The ring was still there, a bit smudged. He asked me what I had been doing. I told him I had been keeping a count. I have put the kettle on for the second time, Nan. Come home at Easter and bring the compass with you.
