Small line tattoo on the mid back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small row of thin black marks, including an X-like symbol and angular characters, sits across the mid back. The linework is fine and uniform, and the ink is solid black with no shading or colour. The bare back is framed by a white lace bodysuit against a light bed, with the face not shown.

The message came in on the Tuesday tide, eleven marks long, and Ada Penhallow copied every one onto the slate before the cable man could argue. Nobody on the Scilly relay had a key for it. The strokes were wrong, the spacing was wrong, and the crossed stroke at the head of the line would not sit in any column she knew.

Her uncle, who had kept the station since the Boer business, said it was a Spanish cipher and would be sorted by Friday. Friday passed. She took the slate home in her apron pocket and set the marks against the almanac, the tide tables and the names of the boats that had not come back. An X, then two angled strokes, then a small hook. She tried them as hours, as latitudes, as weights of salt cod.
On the ninth night she saw it. The hook was a bearing, the strokes were a count, and the X was simply where the sea went under the rocks at Crow Ledge, where the Marian Hale had gone down with her lamp still lit. The message had been sent three years late by a clerk who had forgotten which way the cable ran.
She wrote the position on the back of a telegram form, put on her coat and walked out to the point with the lamp. Nobody sent the men. She went herself, and at slack water she found the iron ring, rusted to the width of a hand, exactly where the marks had said it would be.
