Dear Tomasz, the pear tree you planted the spring before you left has finally given us fruit, eleven small hard pears, and Mama insisted on wrapping each one in newspaper as if they were eggs. I told her you would only eat them standing over the sink, the way you always did, but she says that is no reason to waste good paper.

The lettering on the sundial is nearly gone. I went out with a wire brush on Sunday and could only make out the first word, which I am fairly sure was Pamiętaj, remember, though the rest has worn into the stone like rain into a pillow. I sat on the bench for a while trying to fill in the gaps myself. I kept getting them wrong, which pleased me more than I expected.
The post office in Wadowice says parcels to your side of the border take nine weeks now, so do not be cross if this reaches you when the pears are compost. Send me a photograph of the new flat, and tell me whether the sun comes through the kitchen window the way Father promised it would.
