Black mandala tattoo on upper thigh
Blackwork · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a black t-shirt and black underwear stands side on, with her face out of frame. A large black mandala design with scalloped, lace-like petals sits on the upper buttock and thigh. The ornament is built from fine solid linework and fills on pale skin, against a soft-focus sandy background.

Snow had sealed the Hob and Lantern for four days, and Ada Clegg had run out of patience before she ran out of flour. She sat by the range with the bobbin pillow across her knees, pins standing in a ring like the spokes of a cartwheel, and let the pattern grow under her fingers. The thread was cheap cotton, the only sort the carrier from Keighley had not yet delivered, and it kept snapping at the knot.

Her one guest, a surveyor called Tobias Rennie, had been stranded in the snug since Tuesday with a broken axle and a sour temper. He leaned over her shoulder and frowned. "Your scallops don't close. They go round and round and never arrive." Ada told him that was the point. Each petal leaned on the next, and the middle was left open on purpose, a held breath of ground that the whole design existed to frame.
On the fifth morning a thaw dripped from the eaves and the lane cracked open with a sound like tearing linen. Tobias packed his theodolite and paid his shilling, then stopped at the door. He had spent the nights sketching her work on the back of his survey sheets, and he held one out to her. The petals in his drawing closed neatly, every edge joined.
Ada studied it for a long moment, then folded it into her apron pocket without comment. When the cart had gone she lifted the finished rosette from the pillow, still faintly warm from the range, and laid it in tissue. It had no beginning and no end, only the open centre where she had left room for something to be finished by someone else.
