Small script tattoo on upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with her hair up and one arm raised is photographed from behind, wearing a low-backed white top and denim shorts outdoors. A small, thin script tattoo sits on her upper back, just below the nape of the neck, and is rendered in dark ink. The black and white photograph has soft, backlit foliage in the background.

Dear Nell, the lock at Stoke Wharf has finally been mended, though the lock-keeper says it will go again by Michaelmas, so I shan't count on it. We moored the Patience under the willows last night and I sat up with the lamp, listening to the water slap the hull and thinking about the letter you never sent me from Leeds.

Your father always said a barge is only as honest as its paperwork, and I have the cargo bills in order, all forty sacks of Welsh slate, but the tin box under my bunk has lost its brass key. I have turned out every locker twice. Mr Tully on the next boat swears he saw a gull take it off the gunwale at dawn, and I am half inclined to believe him, since the gulls on this stretch are worse than the thieves.

Here is what I did find, tucked behind the stove: the card you drew for me the summer we were nineteen, with the swallow and the line of verse underneath. I had forgotten the verse was yours. It says the river keeps what it's given and gives back what it can spare. I used to think that was a sad thing to write.

I am going to ask Tully to row me back to the last lock tomorrow, and if the key is not in the reeds by noon I shall stop looking and simply post you the box, empty, as a joke you will have to forgive. Write to me at Shardlow, care of the post office, and tell me whether you still think the river is sad.
