On the other side, Tomasz Wrenn, the caretaker's boy who had climbed up with the torch, heard the knocks and knocked back twice. Nobody in the block had ever seen them speak beyond good morning at the bins. Now they made a game of it, one knock for yes and two for no, and it went on for hours, until the wives on the ninth landing came out with a kettle and a bag of pasties and started singing to keep the children calm.

The old tenants had a saying about the lift. A full stop ends a sentence and that is that, but a semicolon is for two things that belong together and are not finished yet. Tomasz had learned it at a night class in the library, and when the fire crew finally levered the doors apart at dawn, he leaned through the gap and told her so. 'It's only a pause,' he said. 'Not the end of it.'

Nell laughed, a bit too loudly, and took the torch from him. Later that week someone pinned a bus ticket to the lift door with a dot and a curl drawn on the back, and nobody took it down.
