Small black star on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised arm shows a small, solid black star tattoo on the inner forearm close to the wrist. The star has filled black ink with a simple, crisp outline and sits centrally against pale skin. The plain, textured grey wall behind the arm keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The road out past Sayer's Well is nothing but a pale line on the map and a rumour in the café at Tuscarora. Mr Abernethy swears it will be tarmac by spring. I have stopped believing him.

Last night I did something daft. The cloud was so thick over the ridge that I could not tell north from my own boots, so I stood on the tailgate and waited. Then one star came through, low and sharp, just above the dead saguaro. I kept my eye on it the way Dad taught me on the boat, and I walked where it told me, nearly three miles, until the gravel came up under my feet again.
At first light I found the star was not a star at all but the tin sign for Ruiz Garage, one point bent flat, lit from behind by a bulb somebody had forgotten to switch off. I laughed until I had to sit down in the grit. Still, it had got me to the road, and that is more than most things manage out here.
I am keeping the sign. I've bolted it to the dashboard, bent point facing up, so whatever happens I know which way is home. Write back care of the post office at Sayer's Well. Tell me the lamp is still on at the kitchen window. Your loving sister, Bea.
