Small shaded rose on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small rose in full bloom is tattooed on the inner forearm, with layered petals drawn around a tight centre. The linework is fine and the petals are built up with soft grey shading that gives them depth. The rose sits near the middle of the frame against plain skin, with a pale fabric edge and the top of a bare back visible in the background.

The gardener's youngest daughter had cut three roses from the wall of Caddon Keep before the steward noticed, and by then the king had already sent for her. Her name was Ilse Varrow, and she had a habit of talking to plants as though they were slow-witted cousins who needed reminding of their manners.

The king wanted the rose in the centre of the north court, the one that had never opened in his lifetime. It sat tight as a fist, its outer petals grey as river stones, and the court physicians called it sulking. Ilse knelt beside it with her knife and her oilcloth and asked the king what he had promised the miller's widow last winter. He said he could not remember. The rose, she said, could.
Every petal on it kept a debt. The king went quiet, then sent a clerk for the widow's ledger, and the gardeners watched the outer ring loosen, one petal lifting from the grey like a sigh. By evening the second ring had softened to a dark rose colour, and the shadows beneath each petal had deepened into soft folds. Ilse did not stay to see the rest. She walked down to the mill with a loaf she had baked that morning for the widow, which was the first thing she had remembered to do all week.
When the king came himself at dawn, the centre was still closed. He knelt in the wet dew and asked it, in a low voice, what it wanted. Ilse, who had been asleep against the wall with her boots still on, told him that a rose only opens as far as its promises go, and that the heart is kept for the promise a person means to keep longest.
