Lotus with geometric circles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A lotus flower with layered petals and a seed head fills the centre of the image, drawn in fine black linework with circular arcs running through the petals. Thin dotted lines and larger circles extend around the flower, adding a geometric framework. The tattoo is in black ink and greys on pale skin, photographed straight on against a dark, blurred background.

Every night the lamplighter of Vell walked the canal path with a pair of brass compasses in his coat, because his grandmother had told him that a city was only a drawing that had not yet been finished. He measured the arches of the bridges, the rims of the cistern lids and the round window of the customs house, and he chalked each circle onto a slate he carried under his arm.

One wet night in October he reached the old water garden behind the glassworks and found the pond full of lotus leaves that should not have been there in autumn. In the middle of the largest bloom sat a seed head pocked with holes like a sieve, and each hole held a small dark bead. He counted forty-one. When he drew the bloom on his slate, the circles he had gathered all year ran through its petals as though the flower had been built from them.
The pond keeper, a woman who sold eels from a barrow, told him to leave one circle open. 'Everything drawn closed is finished,' she said, 'and the lotus only opens where the line is broken.' So he left the bridge arch unjoined, and the next morning a dotted line ran along the canal bank, fine as thread, out past the gasworks toward the sea.
Years later the chalk is gone from his coat, but the slate hangs in the garden house. Visitors ask what the open circle was for. He tells them it was for the seeds to drop through, and that the city has been slowly growing ever since.
