Small black flower on the back of a hand

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a daisy-like flower with a short curved stem sits on the back of a hand, close to the wrist. The linework is thin and clean, with simple solid ink in the petals and no shading. The photograph is warmly lit against a dark background, with the hand filling the frame and the tattoo near the centre.

Dear Nell,

The daisies came up along the sea wall the week after you left, which Mam says is the harbour's way of getting on with things. I've been sitting on the bench by the fish market with the ledger open on my knee, counting boats back in, and every time a gull lands on the rail I think it is you coming up the steps with your bag over one shoulder.

Mr Ferris at the chandlery has finally sold the blue dinghy. He asked after you and I said you were somewhere with trams and too many umbrellas. He nodded as if he knew exactly the sort of place, then gave me a stem of dried sea holly for the kitchen window, which I suspect was a bribe to make you write back.

Here is the thing I meant to say before the train. Your little ink flower, the one with the crooked stalk you drew on the back of the tide tables the summer we were twelve, has faded to a grey smudge where the paper got damp. I keep meaning to copy it out again but I haven't the nerve to get it wrong. So I'm leaving the tables in the drawer as they are, a bit wobbly, a bit like us that summer.

Write soon, or come home on the Thursday boat. Either will do.

Love, Ros
