Small crescent moon and sun on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon and a sun with short rays sit side by side on the side of a finger, shown in a close-up of a hand held against a white background. The linework is thin and dark black, with no shading. The black and white photograph is clean and simply framed, with the tattoo placed in the centre of the frame.

Dear Tom, the tide was out so far this morning that the Morwenna boats sat on the mud like dropped shoes, and I thought of you walking the breakwater with your collar up. Mam has put your chair back by the range. She says it is for drying, not for sitting, and then she sits in it herself every evening after the lamps are lit.

I went to Ruth Pengelly's shop on Fore Street yesterday, the one with the brass bell that sticks. She still has the stencil book her father kept, the one with the sun in twelve rays and the crescent with the little hook at its tip. I told her I wanted them small, the size of a barley grain, on the side of my first finger. She looked at me over her spectacles and said you only get one pair of hands, Ellen, and I said that was the point.
So it's done, and it stung like a wasp with opinions. Ruth wiped it with something that smelt of oranges and told me to keep it out of the brine for a fortnight. Every time I reach for the kettle I see the sun first, then the moon, the way we always argued about it on the wall at Gwithian, you always wanting the sun first because you were the one who got up early.
Write soon. Tell me if the crescent is facing the right way out there. I have decided it is facing you.
Ellen
