Small solid black silhouette on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a bare foot, shown from the sole side with the toes at the top of the frame, against a grey stone surface. A small, solid black silhouette tattoo sits on the fleshy part of the foot, with no internal linework or shading visible. The image is in natural tones with a shallow depth of field, so the background and the edges of the foot are softly blurred.

Her brother Tobias had drawn it for her years ago on the back of a chip paper: a lump with a notch for the harbour and a bite out of the north shore where the sea had taken a cottage. "Keep it," he'd said. "Then you'll always know where home is." She had carried it in her purse until the paper went furry and the pencil faded, but the shape stayed in her head, the hunch of the hills and the little hook of the headland.
The dock was empty except for a dog asleep by the bollards and a man in oilskins coiling rope. Nobody asked her business. On the bench outside the shop, a woman was shelling peas into a bowl and looked up as though she had been expecting a visitor for thirty years.
Margit found the cottage with the broken north wall. Tobias was on the step with a mug of tea going cold beside him. He held up the old paper, now pinned to a board, its lines gone soft. Margit laid her palm flat against the wet stone and felt that the island was exactly where her memory had left it.
