The calf had stopped again at the washed-out culvert, folding its small grey legs under it the way it did whenever the wind changed. Ilse counted the herd off against her clipboard without looking down. Nine adults, one yearling, one calf. The matriarch was already halfway up the scree, ears spread like sails, and she did not look back for anybody.

Ilse had been hired to log water points along the Kanzi Gap, a job her brother said nobody sane would take in October. She had taken it because the pass was the last stretch on the map that still had no names for anything, and because her mother used to say elephants remember every road they have ever walked. Ilse had not believed her. She believed it a little more each time the herd doubled back to a spring they had found decades before the survey stakes went in.

By noon the calf had caught up, pressing its trunk into the back of its mother's leg as if she might vanish. Ilse wrote the coordinates in pencil, because ink ran in the rain, and sat on a flat rock to eat her bread. The calf came over, examined her boot with great seriousness, and then sat down beside her as though it had been appointed to keep an eye on her.

When the herd finally reached the top of the pass, the matriarch stopped to test the air. Ilse photographed the two of them against the white sky, the big one and the small one, walking the same line. In the margin of her survey sheet she wrote spring confirmed, and beneath it, the far side still needs walking. Then she shouldered the pack and followed the tracks down.
