Small sprig tattoo on the lower leg
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple sprig or fern-like branch is drawn in solid black ink on smooth skin. The linework is thin and even, with short side strokes angled off a central stem. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a soft, out-of-focus background, with a sandal strap at the lower right edge.

No, no, put the kettle back on, you'll not hear the end of it without your tea. Where was I? Ah, the boat. Your great-grandfather's boat, the Morag Ann, went out past the Skerries with a cracked rudder and a boy aboard who had never been further than the pier.

The sea took the rudder first, then the wind turned round and sat on them like a broody hen. They drifted three days. On the third morning the boy saw a green sprig floating past the bow, just the one, feathered like a bird's wing, and he said to himself that no land grows a thing like that without land being near. He was right, though he was wrong about most of what he said that week.
Hold still, I'm getting to it. They came ashore on the north side of Eilean Beag where the bracken grows to your shoulder and nobody has ever bothered to name the ferns. The boy climbed the slope with the sprig clenched in his fist, and he found a hundred more, all the same, sprouting from the stones of an old chapel with no roof. Somebody had planted them there, or the wind had, and he never did learn which.
So he carried one home, pressed in the back of his Bible, and every winter after that he'd take it out and look at how each little leaf sits off the main stem like it's been invited to. That's all I know of faithfulness, my dear. Not much. But it's a start.
Now, bed.
