Hold the lantern low, Teodor, the stones here are wet and the guard's dog is not as lazy as it looks. Four of them went down the goat track that night, the way my grandmother told it, and she never let us forget the order they walked in. The eldest went first, Dolores, with a tin box of papers strapped to her chest. Behind her came Ansel, then his sister Mira, then the little one, who was called Bo because nobody in the village could agree on a longer name for him.

The track bent around the shoulder of the hill like a dropped string, and each of them grew smaller against the grey slope the further down they went. From the road above, the guards with their torches could see only the line of them shrinking, as if the mountain were swallowing its children one at a time. Halfway down, Bo sat on a rock and would not get up. His canvas shoe had come loose in the mud, and the lace had snapped.

Dolores did not go back for him. She called softly across the gully, and he heard her, and he knew the difference between a call to hurry and a call to wait. So he knotted the lace twice, the way his father had taught him at a kitchen table far away, and ran after his sister's torch until the river lay in front of them, black and loud and shorter than anyone had promised.
