Small sprig tattoo on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of the upper back of a person with short, wavy hair, showing a small sprig of leaves with a thin stem. The fine, single-needle linework is delicate and uses little shading, with the leaves drawn as simple outlines. The image is monochrome and centred on the tattoo, with a small dark mole nearby on the skin.

Nobody on Halden Ring had touched soil in eleven years, so when the water recyclers failed I was the one sent down to the old drum garden with rusted shears and orders to find anything still green. The lamps were dead. I worked by my helmet light, moving along the rows of grey trays until I found a single stem of rosemary, thin as wire, clinging to the lip of a cracked basin.

I should have left it. Ines had said the Council only wanted seed-stock, not leaves. But the stem still had three sprigs of needles soft enough to bend, and I could not make myself snap it. I wrapped it in my spare undershirt and carried it up the spine of the station in my pocket, past the sealed hatches and the children's dormitory, where someone had painted a sun on the wall in ochre that was flaking now.

In the greenhouse, Ines held it up to the one working lamp and said nothing for a long time. Then she pinched a leaf and rubbed it between her fingers, and the smell filled the room, sharp and clean, the first real scent I had known since I was small enough to be carried.

She did not thank me. She pressed the sprig into a jar of water on the sill and told me to come back in the morning to see whether it would root. It did, by the third day, a pale fuzz at the cut. We have no word for hope on Halden, only a rota, so I wrote the date on the jar instead, and every morning since I have checked whether it is still there.
