A small stag head with branching antlers is tattooed centrally on the upper back, below the nape of the neck. The antlers are drawn in thin, crisp black lines, while the head is filled with fine stippled dots. The image is black and white, with soft light on the skin and the subject's hair falling across the top of the frame.

Brother Anselm found the stag standing in the frost of the herb garden, its breath rising like a second, smaller prayer. Nobody at Saint Oswin's had seen a beast come so close to the bell tower since the old abbot died, and the novices crowded the cloister arches to watch it strip the rosemary with its lips.

The stag did not run when the lay brothers came with their rakes. It only lifted its head, and the antlers rose against the grey sky in thin, branching lines, each tine splitting like a winter twig. Brother Anselm, who had spent forty years copying psalms in a hand so fine the other monks said it could be read through vellum, found he could count every point. Seven on the left, eight on the right. He wanted to draw it, but his ink had frozen in the pot.

On the third morning the stag was gone. In the snow where its head had rested lay a small dark patch, pricked over with a thousand tiny marks, as if the frost had been stamped with a seal. Anselm knelt and pressed his thumb to it, and it did not melt.

He went to the scriptorium and wrote, for the first time in his life, a line that was not in any psalter: that the abbey had been given a guest, and that guests were owed their silence.
