Small sun and moon tattoos on two arms

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on separate arms: a sun drawn as an open circle with short rays on the left, and a crescent moon in outline on the right. Both designs use thin, even black linework with no shading. The photograph is black and white, with woven bracelets framing each tattoo and the image cropped close to the skin.

Bet, the tide was out again when I came off the shift, and I stood on the causeway with the sky going from ink to milk and thought of you pulling the shutters up over the tea urns. I've got the lamp log open on the table beside me. Forty-one entries tonight, all of them ships I couldn't see, only their lights, which is more than the fishermen get from the sea wall.

Mam says we were always the wrong way round as children, you wanting to stay up for the owls and me asleep before the kettle boiled. I didn't tell her the sun drawings were my idea, or that I made you a sun because you'd never once been awake for the bit of day I liked best. The bracelets were a joke then. Three strands of baler twine, plaited on the kitchen step, the knots gone grey with salt.

Last Tuesday the keeper's boy brought a letter from you with a pressed buttercup in it, flattened so hard it was only a yellow shadow. I held it up to the lamp and thought it was the one bit of daylight that ever gets into this tower. You'd have laughed at me for sitting in the dark with a flower in my lap.

So here is the arrangement, since you never listen: when the light comes up over the dunes, I'll be asleep with my wrist on the pillow, and you'll be behind the counter with yours reaching for the milk jug. Hold the twine up to the window. That's the only time we're the same colour.
