Sun and crescent moon tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on separate areas of skin, one showing a sun drawn as a circle with rays and the other a crescent moon. The linework is thin and uniform, with no shading, and the ink reads as black and grey. The photograph is black and white and frames the two designs close together, with woven string bracelets visible above and below them.

The bus stopped at the checkpoint at ten past three, and the guard came down the aisle with a torch, matching faces to photographs. Nell kept her hands in her lap with the string bracelet pressed flat under her cuff. Beside her, Ada was counting under her breath the way their grandmother had taught them, one number for each thing that could still go wrong.

They had agreed on the bracelets in a kitchen in March, sitting on the back step with a ball of cotton between them. Ada would take the moon, because she was the one who always stayed up late reading. Nell took the sun, because somebody had to be awake before the bread. Ada fetched a biro from the drawer and drew the marks on each other's wrists, a circle with rays for Nell and a thin bent blade for herself, and then their mother called them in for tea. Neither of them ever quite remembered which drawing had been whose.

The guard stopped at their row and looked at Nell's passport, then Ada's, then at the two of them side by side. "Visiting family?" Nell said yes. Ada said nothing, which was her way. The torch lingered on the grey thread that had once been a bracelet and was now just a frayed loop, and Nell felt the biro mark under her cuff as if it were warm.

The guard handed the passports back and moved on. Outside, the fields had begun to pale and the sky over the hills thinned at one edge. Ada let out a breath and turned her wrist toward the window, where the little moon still sat beside the sun, two drawings that had outlasted a kitchen step, a biro and a needle. Nell watched the light come up and thought the sun had never once risen without someone waiting for it.
