Two small black tattoos on the inner wrists, a sun with rays on one wrist and a crescent moon with a star on the other, both in simple black ink.

Sun, moon and star tattoos on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are raised with the palms turned outwards, showing a black sun with radiating rays on the left wrist and a crescent moon with a small star on the right wrist. The sun is drawn with bold, tapered rays and an unshaded centre, while the moon appears softly shaded in grey. The image is lit by warm sunlight, with gold bangles on both wrists and a blurred street behind.

The duty book at Harrowgate Lane had two columns, and Ada Pryce had never once seen the second one filled in her sister's hand while she was awake to watch it. Nell took the night board; Ada took the day. They met at the handover at dusk, when the lamp over the door came on and the sun was a smear over the gasworks.

That autumn the exchange developed a fault that only appeared after dark. Calls to the coast came through with a hiss like a kettle, and Nell swore the voices on the far end lagged half a second behind their own mouths. She kept a pencil log of every one. Ada found it on the Tuesday, a column of times, and beside each entry, small and careful, a crescent drawn in the margin with a single star tucked into its curve.

Ada took the log to the engineer, Mr Haig, who listened to the hiss and shrugged. It was the cable under the canal, he said, nothing to be done until the frost broke. But Ada had already noticed the pattern in her sister's marks: every fault came in the hour after the sun went down, never before. So on the Friday she stayed past six, sat on the high stool, and took the night line herself.

At ten past nine a woman's voice came through, asking for a number that did not exist. Ada gave her the right one anyway, and heard, faint and unmistakable under the hiss, Nell humming along the wire from the room next door. The moon had cleared the canal bridge. The lamp buzzed. Her sister's pencil was still warm on the desk, and the star in the margin looked, for once, as if it had been waiting to be found.
