Crescent moon with sun rays on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a crescent moon with a row of short, pointed rays fanning out around its curve, sitting on the inner wrist. The linework is delicate and single-needle in appearance, with the rays built from fine dots and strokes. The ink is a single dark tone on light skin, and a gold chain bracelet runs across the wrist beside it, with a hand gently holding the chain at the top of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

The plate came back from the foundry with its rays on the wrong side, and Abbot Hollis would not let it be melted down. He said the brothers had waited eleven months for it and that God had made stranger errors than a sun that faced inward. So it hangs now above the north door of the chapter house, a crescent of tin pricked out with a fan of short points, and nobody quite knows which way to read it.
I have been given the keeping of it, as I am given everything nobody else wants. Each dusk I climb the stair with the lamp and a bit of chalk and mark the moon's phase on the slate beside the plate, and each dawn I come back and mark the sun. Brother Tobias says it is the only work in the house that is wholly useless, and I told him that was why I liked it.
Last Lent I found a second set of scratches on the slate, very fine, a row of dots I had not made. Brother Edmund, who sleeps badly and prays better awake, confessed when I asked him that he had been copying the moon's shape each night so the chalk would not wear thin. He had been doing it for three years without telling anyone.
I have not corrected the plate. Hollis was right, the rays point the wrong way, but the light still reaches the floor of the chapter house at noon, and from there it looks as if the sun has finally turned round to look at the moon.
Your loving brother, Anselm
